چکیده

(Photosynthetic responses of tropical tree species from different successional groups under contrasting irradiance conditions). This study evaluated the photosynthetic responses of seven tropical trees of different successional groups under contrasting irradiance conditions, taking into account changes in gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence. Although early successional species have shown higher values of CO 2 assimilation (A) and transpiration (E), there was not a defined pattern of the daily gas exchange responses to high irradiance (FSL) among evaluated species. Cariniana legalis (Mart.) Kuntze (late secondary) and Astronium graveolens Jacq. (early secondary) exhibited larger reductions in daily-integrated CO 2 assimilation (DIA) when transferred from medium light (ML) to FSL. On the other hand, the pioneer species Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. had significant DIA increase when exposed to FSL. The pioneers Croton spp. trended to show a DIA decrease around 19%, while Cytharexyllum myrianthum Cham. (pioneer) and Rhamnidium elaeocarpum Reiss. (early secondary) trended to increase DIA when transferred to FSL. Under this condition, all species showed dynamic photoinhibition, except for C. legalis that presented chronic photoinhibition of photosynthesis. Considering daily photosynthetic processes, our results supported the hypothesis of more flexible responses of early successional species (pioneer and early secondary species). The principal component analysis indicated that the photochemical parameters effective quantum efficiency of photosystem II and apparent electron transport rate were more suitable to separate the successional groups under ML condition, whereas A and E play a major role to this task under FSL condition.

Functional Trait Trade-Offs for the Tropical Montane Rain Forest Species Responding to Light from Simulating Experiments

Differences among tropical tree species in survival and growth to light play a key role in plant competition and community composition. Two canopy species with contrasting functional traits dominating early and late successional stages, respectively, in a tropical montane rain forest of Hainan Island, China, were selected in a pot experiment under 4 levels of light intensity (full, 50%, 30%, an...

Asymptotic Height as a Predictor of Photosynthetic Characteristics in Malaysian Rain Forest Trees

Comparative studies of photosynthetic physiology in rain forest trees have focused on differences related to successional status, with the general finding that earlysuccessional species tend to show physiological characteristics of sun plants, while latesuccessional species show shade-plant characteristics. The present study examines analogous evolutionary responses to vertical gradients in lig...

Variation in the population structure between a natural and a human-modified forest for a pioneer tropical tree species not restricted to large gaps

The distribution of tree species in tropical forests is generally related to the occurrence of disturbances and shifts in the local environmental conditions such as light, temperature, and biotic factors. Thus, the distribution of pioneer tree species is expected to vary according to the gap characteristics and with human disturbances. We asked whether there was variation in the distribution of...

Seedling growth of fifteen Brazilian tropical tree species differing in successional status

(Seedling growth of fifteen Brazilian tropical tree species differing in successional status). Growth of seedlings of fifteen tropical tree species representative, at the adult stage, of different successional positions, was studied under field conditions. Seedlings were grown in three treatments: full sun (FS), artificial shade imposed by neutral screens (AS) and natural shade imposed by a clo...

Effects of light environment and successional status on lightfleck use by understory trees of temperate and tropical forests.

Utilization efficiency (LUE) of lightflecks by leaves increases with decreasing duration of the lightfleck, and depends on photosynthetic induction. Sun and shade leaves differ with respect to photosynthetic induction. Shade leaves may become fully induced by a series of light pulses, whereas photosynthetic induction of leaves from partial shade or full sun depends on continuous light. Addition...
